To tow a large heavy load such as a boat or yacht, boat trailers need a powerful towing vehicle. Boat trailers are designed to be backed into the water to enable the boat to be winched on or off the trailer.

As boats are launched into the water whilst still on their trailers', their frames are usually contructed from aluminum or galvanized steel as other materials would corrode due to frequent contact with sea water.

Boat Trailer Capacity

One of the main considerations when looking at new and used boat trailers for sale, is whether the trailer will fit the size of the boat your wish to tow. Both the physical length and width should be taken into account as well as the gross weight of the boat.

All boat trailers are designed and built to a maximum gross load, simply put, the trailer cannot carry any more weight than it was designed for. Many boat owners incorrectly determine or underestimate the maximum gross load which a trailer will be required to handle.

You should also be aware of the braking requirements associated with the gross weight of your rig, as a larger boat requires more powerful brakes on its trailer.

In order to facilitate a smooth launching of your boat from the trailer you will need to assess whether the trailer you wish to buy has a sufficient number of rollers, wheter the rollers positioned correctly and are they of good quality? These can be difficuly questions to answer, even when commissioning a new custom trailer.

The basic rule to remember, is the more rollers a trailer has, the easier it will be to launch and retrieve. Rollers are also important to distribute the weight of your boat evenly across the trailer.
